Speaking of sycamores, I spotted this enormous specimen just off of New Hampshire Avenue out past Ashton.
It's huge! I'm glad those people kept it there when they built their house. I wonder how old that tree is? I've always been in love with sycamores!
The sign below makes me smile every time I see it, but I'm usually driving too fast to read all of it. Today I stopped. I think it was the Monster Worms 24/7 that made me want to take a closer look.
Farther down New Hampshire Avenue, at the intersection with Adelphi Road, the sign twirler was taking a break. Free Rent & Free Utilities sounds like a pretty good deal to me! When he started back up with the twirling, the sign was completely unreadable. That doesn't seem like a very efficient advertising technique. But the free rent makes up for that I guess.

Love the smiling sycamore. :)
It's a very friendly looking tree isn't it? I really want to see it at night sometime- maybe all that's visible is a floating smiley face?
The sycamore reminds me of the apple trees in the Wizard of Oz because it appears to have two arms. In fact, the smile looks a bit fake. I bet if you got close it would try to grab you.
I don't think I could recognize a sycamore tree if my life depended on it, although once upon a time I did earn the Tree Badge in Girl Scouts. I'm always in awe of big old trees, figuring they have seen a lot in their lifetimes.
Mike - That thought did cross my mind in spite of the smile. I guess that's why I stayed in my car.
Barbara - If you earned the tree badge you probably used to be able to recognize a sycamore. They are all over this area, the huge trees with the mottled white bark.
That's a gnarly tree!
Lovely, lovely trees and I love the thought of the worms. Thanks for sharing your pictures!
Yeah, it's the gnarly branches and beautiful white bark that I especially love about sycamore trees. I wanted to get one for my front yard but the closest we could find was a London plane tree. It was very disappointing to not be able to find this native tree for sale anywhere. So my admiration for sycamores is somewhat wistful.
worms on your honor! I love it!
Free rent and utilities? I'm in!
