empty nest syndrome

It has been a year since my beloved cat Ted passed away. I had been planning to write one final post about him would include a few baby pictures that we found, but I don't have it in my heart to do that right now. Ted was the closest thing to a child that we ever will have and we still miss him alot. It has been awful not having him around anymore although we had him for a good long time. He was 18 when he died last year.

Now a very good friend of mine is going through the same thing. Her 18 year old cat Tom died on Sunday night. I feel sad all over again. I really liked Tom a lot. Doug and I stopped in to visit him one last time on our way home Saturday night. He was very thin and very weak, but still just as friendly as he could possibly be. I'm glad we got to see him although it makes me miss Ted all over again. And now Tom as well.

R.I.P. Tom Handsome

You definitely need a new cat. In the meantime come meet me for coffee at Sidamo any morning and see the coolest (4-legged) cat ever who comes there on a leash with his owner. It will help you make up your mind to get a kitten!

For now, RIP Ted and Tom. I'm sure you both had wonderful long lives.

Oh, Ted. I'll sprinkle some catnip on the ground in his memory. RIP.

I know exactly what you mean, though. I had a cockatiel, Petrie, for almost fourteen years and when she passed away it was unbelievably difficult. It does get easier, and recently, I've even been toying with the idea of getting Petrie the Second :)

Thanks Barbara and Mo. I don't think my friend who just lost her Tom, or I will be getting new pets anytime soon. We both travel far more often than we used to and I'm pretty sure that we both feel the same way about our respective cats. I don't really want to get another cat. Ted was it for me.

Barbara, we'll meet for coffee sometime, but I'm pretty swamped between school and the house. I shouldn't even be on the internet at all right now!

I am sorry for your loss and that of your friend. I've never had a pet; I cannot even imagine what you're going through but it's got to be rough.

Kristin - I had no idea I would become so deeply attached to my cat and my friend who just lost her cat is even more that way. Maybe it's because we don't have kids.

Thank you everyone for all of your kind words. I know my friend will appreciate reading them as she grieves for Tom.

Mo - I know someone who has had at least two, and maybe three, miniature Yorkshire Terriers, all named Mindy!

There aren't enough words in the world to say what an amazing post this is and what an amazing friend you are.

If you read Cyndy's post about Ted, it's all true. He was a remarkably friendly and relaxed cat. Tom had considerable charm, but he wasn't a cat you could pick up and hold (well, I could, but only for a very short time). He'd lie on top of me and sleep for a couple of hours, but not so much for picking up.

Ted, on the other hand, seemed just as happy - maybe happier - to be carried around as not. He was a beautiful, big, striped cat and it was a very sad day when he left us.

Love hurts.

Pets are such a huge part of the family. I always think how sad it is that they don't share our life span. I hope you fill that empty nest with another lucky Tom or Ted very soon. Just think how excited this new cat will be to have you as an "owner"

You can never really replace a pet you truly love - but when enough time has passed, I hope you consider getting another one. We have a really wonderful "neighborhood" cat that someone obviously abandoned. Everyone has been taking care of him and another neighbor has taken him in now that it's gotten cold (we're all hoping that she'll keep him, but she already has two other cats that aren't thrilled - so it's not looking good). Anyway - this has made me realize that there are so many animals out there that need homes. We'll never be able to have a cat since my mother has bad allergies, but we'll eventually get a dog - and hope to adopt one from a shelter.

Okay - I kind of got off track there... But I guess what I had initially meant to say is that you obviously have a lot of love to give, and you deserve to have another child (and that hypothetical cat deserves to have you!) When and if you're ready of course.
