It's always something...

I haven't had the time or the energy to post in a while - we've been too busy shoveling out of one place and into another. When we finally made it into our house we were in such a huge hurry to get most of the rest of the basement drywall mudded, sanded, and painted, that we decided to just ignore this situation just outside our back porch for the time being.

Yuck, more work for us, just what we need. Yesterday we finally shoveled around far enough in the back to see the extent of the damage. It looks like the roof survived just fine, but the bottom section of our cedar tree has been rather severely and crudely pruned by the heavy snow.

So in addition to the work on the house ALWAYS taking longer than either of us could possibly expect, we are going to have to clear these branches out of the way in order to move in. It's pretty obvious that we won't be able to move in by the end of this month. So that's another month of rent we'll have to pay. The snow has really held us back.

Those are some big branches that came down!

Elsewhere in our back yard, a woodpecker sits at the end of yet another broken off tree branch.

Speaking of trees, I'll be playing in the pit for Scott Joplin's rarely performed opera, Treemonisha, next weekend. The music is lovely - operatic ragtime, if you will. And the singer who plays Treemonisha has an absolutely gorgeous voice.

So sorry to hear about the extra unexpected work. I was driving around Bowie today, and I noticed a lot of gutters hanging from houses. The storms did some damage. I'm waiting for more melting to see how the bushes in the front of our house did. They're still under a lot of snow.

The trees and shrubs everywhere have really taken a beating from all the snow. We don't even know the total extent of the damage until it all melts.

Treemonisha sounds really interesting. Unfortunately the opera is so expensive these days. Maybe I can play the senior card. Come to think of it, probably most of the audience are seniors...

Lovely shot of the woodpecker! I'm so glad you're out and shooting again, even if most of the shots are an unfortunate subject. What a shawm about the tree!

Mike - Yeah, I guess I'm glad we didn't put our gutters up just yet. I see a lot of cedar sawing in my future.

Barbara - I know, so much stuff is still buried! I don't think the tickets at the Atlas Theatre are nearly as expensive as those at the Kennedy Center, but I could be wrong.

Kristin - Most of the tree is still there (it's big)so I think it will be fine. This time around it was a lot easier to enjoy everyone else's snow pictures than to take any myself. I took a few.

Too bad about the fallen cedar! What a bummer. Many trees in my 'hood came down, too. It was a hell of a storm!

Reya - It was indeed a hell of a storm! The evergreens are what suffered the most. Today I'll be over there with the power saw for a hours cutting those branches into more manageable pieces so that we can take them to the dump where they'll be made into mulch. It's going to take a few days of that before the back entrance will be useable.

For a couple of hours, that is. That's all that my hands can take at one time.
